Studies, still. It seems for the last 5 months all I have been is study. A few unfortunate/unpleasant things have happened in that time.
In general my happiness level is low. If this doesn't change after I work on my dissertation (deadline Feb 2006) I'll have to start making major changes in my life.
Kids would be one, though there is a small problem there, in as much as I am currently not seeing anyone, with very little opportunity to get out (studies and cash) and mostly blokes at work (why don't more women get into IT? Is it just not interesting? Too many 'geeks'?)
So back to studies. At the moment, its Artificial Intelligence. Forget stuff you thought about in films. That's artificial life, in the main, which is completely different. More later on that, perhaps.
One interesting thing KurzwielAI discussed about a Ford system is here. Interesting and perhaps could have been one aim of the engine management systems in place. Strange, perhaps, how it's no longer around. Maybe I should think about this when I'm more awake.

Having kids is not, absolutely NOT, the route to happiness. Take it from me.
Having kids is fine if you're ALREADY in a happy stable situation. But if you're feeling depressed then the last thing that will help is having a bundle of fun disrupting your life. And it won't get any easier if you shack up with a woman who comes complete with a couple of pre-mixed ankle biters in tow. The fact that they're more mobile and capable of independent thought will put a crimp in your social activities.
Work on getting into a stable, child-free relationship first and maintain that for a couple of years at least. Then if you can both still stand to look at each other in the morning, go ahead and donate your bodily fluids.
But not before then.
I agree. Having kids isn't the way to happiness. Happiness comes from within not from "things" and other people.
Work on what makes you feel good (not all cost money, or involve a relationship or sex).
Joolz, you need to come to terms with yourself, which I don't think you've done yet. Set some realistic goals that don't include other people and go from there. Once you know where you're going I think you will be able to see the path more clearly.
Amen to the Palmer.
And...

Yes, and yes. Be fair, would you generally be attracted to a profession where most of the women were balding, fat, bearded, spotty, social misfits? Well, maybe *you* would, but... ;-)
