First Do No Harm, Second Tell No Lies

My thoughts and things. Parts of my life, memes, fun things and perhaps some insights. Mainly just a place for me to note things down that I feel other may be improved by sharing them.

At work I'm trying out some network monitoring tools & management tools. With a budget of 0.

NetCrunch seems snazzy and has a nicely designed interface but I haven't looked into it much. It's expensive though - 1500 bucks for the standard version. This would be on a par with Visio Enterprise, which will also discover devices and document them.

At the moment as we have it, I'm mainly using WhatsUp Gold, though it needs a lot of work.

Other items I've looked into are NetworkView (79 bucks) which is by far the smallest.

Sleep

Why oh why do we have to sleep? I've been at my PC all day - and got a lot done. Now after a brief bit of studying I have a need to get my other PC working - I'd like to do it tonight, but I have to sleep. So I guess it'll have to wait. there's just not enough hours in the day.

Where's that cloning machine?

CV

It's blindingly obvious I need to work on my CV as I'm not getting much in the way of, er, input. However, being as I can't sell myself (even on street corners) this poses a challenge.

Today I went to Mum's to fit a router for her ADSL which was enabled on the 21st.

I forgot the ADSL cable.

So we went and bought one. It turned out the choice (3m) was not sufficient. So I went out again and bought a 10m CAT5 and another extension, just in case.

In the end, I moved the router and used the 10m. But in the process I asked the shop for DVD-RW disks - they gave me DVD-R and I didn't notice until I went out the door. Still, I did get some later. (I know it would be much cheaper to get them online, but considering the flat, I preferred to get them myself rather than miss the delivery.

I also broke mum's brand new passenger side mirror trying to fit it. I wouldn't have minded but it was supposed to replace one previously broken.

All in all, a frustrating day.

I haven't posted much lately - I guess coming back from Oz made me think about a few things.

Though I can't currently find a report that I've broken my atom feed. (Nifty trick! maybe I should sign up for CERN).

Apparently the David Beckham fashion of men having a diamond earring in each ear is taking off. Cyncis may wonder if he paid for them or got a discount?

Talking to 2 people in Russia using Skype they say that microwave ovens are not banned and they both own one. Well there you go.

While out in Australia, I heard that microwave ovens are not good. One article seems to be saying a lot of extraneous material (never a good thing in a paper) though does seem on the face of things to have some evidence. Why believe the internet, though?

However, some of the 'damage' listed is possibly just as likely with conventional cooking.

One possible experiment is to plant some seeds and water them with tap water and microwaved water. So the design of the experiment would be:

3 pots - one watered with tap water, one with cooled microwaved water and one with kettle boiled water, also cooled. Time to set up some things :)

oh bugger, the other PC has broke.

For the second time in twice as many months the SD card in my PDA got corrupted, though before I'm sure it was a different one. FileChk has been very handy. Especially as I haven't cleared up from the first tantrum.

I've gotten back in touch with a friend I've not spoken to for years, since before my ex moved out. "Cat on a hot tin roof" does not even come close.

Currently playing: "I kiss your hand Madame" - Spike Jones & His City Slickers, Strictly for music lovers
